On Tuesday I woke up to find that my carpet was a bit squishier than usual. It turned out that the water feed to the neighbour’s toilet had broken, and the water was leaking into my place as well. Fortunately it only reached half the bedroom, the bathroom, and one hallway, so the damage wasn’t that great. Just a bunch of cardboard boxes with wrecked bottoms, and I’ve got more boxes than I need anyway.
Cleaning up however, is taking a bit of effort. First the maintenance guys had to run a blower under the edge of the carpet so that it billows out and evaporates the water. It had to run for two days straight, right in the middle of the bedroom, and although I was able to sleep rather irregularly through it the first night, I had to move out to the living room floor for the second.
The blower is now gone, but the carpet still has to be repaired. They tore out a lot of the underlying (foam?) material, so that still has to be replaced, and it has to be refastened to the floor. Unfortunately that almost certainly means they’ll have to use carpet glue. If it’s strong enough, I’ll be sorely tempted to shack up in a hotel for a few days. The place already smells a bit from the dampness, and it’s cold enough out that I can’t keep the windows open too long.
And to get at the carpet they had to TOUCH MY STUFF, moving a bunch of furniture into the living room. I hate it when strangers touch my stuff, mainly because it reveals what a huge dork I am. There are still a few things in the bedroom that I’m tempted to move out myself in case they need them moved, just so that they’re not the ones touching them.
And now I’ve got a scratchy throat and a cough, which I’m going to blame on this mess just because. Damn you, carpet!
The blower. Huh huh huh, ‘blow’…
Is this considered ‘carpet dancing’?
It’s not normally this messy, really…
All I have to say is in regards to the last picture — primarily the upper left quadrant…. PANTSPANTSPANTSPANTSPANTSPANTSPANTSPANTSPANTSPANTS!! :-)
(in all seriousness, tho, I hope nothing beyond the carpet was damaged…)
Floating carpet!
